Is it safe to use SMIEngine objects from a thread other than the main UI thread? Is is safe to run operations from threads in a thread pool, provided only one is done at a time?

Yes that is fine provided you only make one call at a time to the dll and keep in mind sometimes the dll waits for a response before returning.
