I believe this is the correct section to post this, and my sincerest apologies if it should be listed under "Hardware".
Quick background: I came into program a "machine" (OIT, Motor, etc.), previously set up by a different company, which has since gone under. Everything has been installed, mounted, wired, etc. but nothing has been programmed, due to the company who set/built this going under. They are missing all cables, manuals, etc., which I have been able to locate most of the items via internet.
***What I am trying to accomplish is simply connecting the motor, to my computer for programming. Something that any average person could do, under normal circumstances.
Specifics:
SmartMotor- SM3416DT-PLS2 (Class 4, "Legacy")
Power Supply- PS42V20AF110(Linear Unregulated DC)
According to the manual I was given (Smart Series 4, Revision 5), I need to connect a Y-cable from the motor, with (1) end going to the DC power supply, and the second (RS232) end to my computer(see pg.9-10). However that is for a brand new motor, and this motor already has power, is mounted, and was working (at some time months ago).
Since everything is already "hard wired", if I remove the cable from the motor, and replace with a cable to connect to my computer, won't all power be cut to the motor? Do I need to purchase the separate DC power supply and cable to connect to my motor for programming, or is there another way around this?

You most likely have a CBLPWRCOM2 cable going from the motor to the power supply. This cable also has 5 small conductors (in addition to the power supply conductors) that are connected to RX,TX,GND,5VDC, and PortG on the motor. Check the flying lead end of the cable and see if these are terminated in your panel. You would only need a 3-wire cable and a 9pin female DSub to connect for programming.
